Every month (or so), adolescent and reproductive aged
females around the world have their period, and shed their endometrial uterine
lining. An unfortunate side effect of this is often pain or cramps called Dysmenorrhea
which is often also accompanied by other symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea
and shaking or tremors.
Dysmenorrhea is thought to be caused by the excessive release
of prostaglandins in the menstrual fluid, which causes uterine contractions and
thus pain (this is also happens during childbirth). Elevated anti-diuretic
hormone (ADH) levels have also been reported in many women with primary
dysmenorrhea, which makes sense because increasing uterine contraction and pain
can be a result of vasoconstriction.
This condition is affecting the lives of between 20
and 90% of menstruating individuals and is the leading cause of recurrent short-term
school absence in adolescent girls. Most women either suffer through the pain
or take pain medication to relieve themselves, but one company has come up with
a way to fix this problem so that neither of these are necessary. Livia is an
FDA approved wearable menstrual pain relieving device that is said to stop the
connection between the brain and endometrium via pulses that eliminate or

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation unit (TENS unit), which is usually

across the surface of the skin and along the nerve strands.

I had seen this device before and couldn't help but laugh because my name is already rare and for this company to use it to relieve cramps was hilarious. In all seriousness, many women suffer from severe pain every month specially if they go through menstruation on a regular and timely manner. I wonder how dysmenorrhea affects women who have absent menstrual periods (amenorrhea) or other irregularities. I also wonder whether the manufacturers of this device tested different levels of pain in women with normal vs irregular periods. Also, I wonder if they studied pain in patient who suffer from endometriosis or uterine abnormalities since these conditions cause more severe pain than regular dysmenorrhea.
